Special Interest Options for Secondary School Teachers
Each course includes Language Development (15 hours per week) and one of these Special Interest Options (8 hours per week).
CREATIVE TEACHING
Course B2: 17 Jan – 30 Jan 2010 (2 weeks)
Course 1A: 4 July – 17 July 2010 (2 weeks
Course 2A: 18 July – 31 July 2010 (2 weeks)
Course 3A: 1 Aug – 14 Aug 2010 (2 weeks)

What does it mean to be a creative teacher? We will look at ways of working creatively with texts, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and areas such as storytelling, music, poetry, drama and movement.
This course will be practical with the focus on learning through enjoyment and creativity. Participants will be encouraged to experience ideas and adapt them to the needs and interests of their own learners. Ideas and materials covered will be of special interest to teachers of secondary and adult students.
CONTENT AND LANGUAGE INTEGRATED LEARNING (CLIL)
Course A3: 3 Jan – 16 Jan 2010 (2 weeks)
Course 4B: 15 Aug – 28 Aug 2010 (2 weeks)
Help your students get the most out of studying curriculum subjects through the medium of English. This option is aimed at secondary school teachers who teach or intend to teach their subject (other than English - for example History, Geography etc.) through the medium of English. We will focus on classroom language; strategies for integrating content and language, and developing communicative competence; working with written, audio and visual text; developing subject-specific language and supporting the students in the learning process. There will be opportunities for teachers to participate in micro-teaching with feedback in their own subject.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN ELT (with Tessa Woodward and/or Seth Lindstromberg)
Course A2: 3 Jan – 16 Jan 2010 (2 weeks)
Explore ways in which ELT is evolving. We will look at how the English language is changing, and at key developments in methodology and research.
The programme will include (depending on the interests of the group): new perspectives on the Lexical Approach, NLP, Dogme/Minimalism, a fresh look at TPR , methods in teaching figurative language, Task-Based Learning and the controversy about the place of grammar in the classroom. It will include using the Interactive Whiteboard, the Internet and webquests etc. for non-specialist users (otherwise new technology is not the prime focus of the course).
This course is intended for teachers of secondary and adult students.
BRITAIN TODAY + CREATIVE TEACHING
Course 1B: 4 July – 17 July 2010 (2 weeks)
Course 2B: 18 July – 31 July 2010 (2 weeks)
Week 1:
Update your knowledge of Britain today – popular culture, people in the news, politics, royalty, education, humour, housing etc – and work with ideas and materials (questionnaires, DVD /video, cartoons, current articles from the media and the Internet) that you can adapt for classroom use.
