Bringing your car or motorcycle to the UK or hiring a car
Useful links and information
When deciding to travel in your own personal vehicle you need to ensure you have the correct documents, insurance and understanding of the British road signs and laws.
Insurance
Make sure you have the correct type of insurance to cover yourself and any other driver should you have an accident outside of your own country.
Driving licence
Does your driving licence cover you to drive in another country?
Do you need to get an International Drivers Licence?
Understanding the law and road signs
It is important that you understand the laws and road signs as failure to comply with an instruction could cause you to be fined. Failing to pay an fine will be a big problem if you are in the UK on a visa. Also, not paying a fine on time will mean the fine amount will increase and may lead to prosecution.
So, understanding road signs is important. One example is the London Congestion Charge zone. This is an area of London where you have to pay a fee before entering the zone. This charge can be paid for up to 90 days before and on the day of travel. You can pay for it either online or by telephone (see the link below). The Government do not take "I don't understand the sign" as an excuse for not paying the charge and you will be faced with a fine.
See the links below for the Highway Code (road signs and laws) and other important information about driving safely in the UK. We want you to drive carefully to and from and around the UK.
